12 Mahajanas: The Great Spiritual Authorities of Vedic Wisdom

Sukadeva Goswami was the spiritually enlightened son of Srila Vyasadeva. He narrated Srimad-Bhagavatam for seven continuous days on the banks of the Ganges (Shukratal) to King Parikshit.

The Four Kumaras are early sons of Brahma who chose to remain celibate children of five years. Their hearts were transformed into pure devotees upon smelling the tulasi leaves at Lord Narayana's feet.

Bali Maharaja, grandson of Prahlada, was exceptionally truthful and devout. When Lord Vishnu appeared as dwarf brahmana Vamanadeva asking for three paces of land, Bali defied his guru's warning and surrendered his own head for the third step.

Bhishmadeva was the son of King Shantanu and Ganga who took a severe vow of celibacy for his father. Lying on a bed of arrows for 58 nights at Kurukshetra, he revealed the Vishnu Sahasranama and left his body gazing upon Lord Krishna.

Svayambhuva Manu is the first of fourteen cosmic Manus. He delivered the ethical code of Manu-smriti, fathered Priyavrata and Uttanapada, and was saved alongside the Vedas by Matsya Avatar during cosmic deluge.

Prahlada Maharaja revealed the nine limbs of bhakti at age five. Despite torture by his demoniac father with poison, wild beasts, boiling oil, and fire, he remained fearless until Lord Narasimha burst from the pillar.

Sage Narada travels across galaxies playing his veena. Through the pastimes of the humble cobbler and the savage hunter Mrigari, he proves the transformative power of chanting the holy names.

Lord Yamaraja is the cosmic judge of justice and death. He reveals the confidential truth of Dharma: that chanting the Holy Name of Narayana protects souls (as with Ajamila), and realization of the immortal soul transcends all material realms (as with Nachiketa).
